ROCHESTER–Yesterday, employees at the University of Rochester and Strong Memorial Hospital ratified their union contract. SEIU Local 200United represents the university workers while 1199SEIU represents the workers at the hospital. It took nine bargaining sessions to reach an agreement with UofR management. There was an incredible amount of excitement from union members as they cast their vote to approve their new contract. UofR will continue to pay 100% of the premium for our healthcare benefits with no increase in out-of-pocket costs and a wage increase retroactive to September 21, 2014 along with many other improvements to the contract. This is a three-year contract that extends to September 16, 2017.
It is important to recognize that for more than 40 years members have fought long and hard to keep what we have, and that struggle will continue. We will work hard to ensure that all of our members continue to earn a fair wage and have adequate healthcare benefits. We have been successful in that fight and we will not accept anything less. Unity has been our strongest asset.
Most importantly, the bargaining committee would like to thank all of the 1199SEIU and Local 200United members for their continued support and involvement in helping us reach an agreement. Everything we do is for the betterment of the members of 1199SEIU and Local 200United, for the patients and students who we serve, and for the Rochester community. It could not have been done without you.
Please note that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the union contract.
