Bard College Student Association Resolution
Passed Unanimously on November 12, 2003

WHEREAS, the Servicemaster/Aramark (hereafter Aramark) workers at Bard college are an integral part of the Bard community;

WHEREAS, Bard students seek to create a community of learning that rejects oppression and fosters the desire to seek justice;

WHEREAS, the Bard College administration has approved and seen through the construction of myriad buildings 'without simultaneously hiring more workers to clean them;

WHEREAS, the scarcity of workers and the increasing number of facilities to clean has left Aramark workers overworked and underpaid;

WHEREAS, the responsibility to dictate the size of the custodial staff rests with the Bard administration and therefore the Bard community of students and staff;

WHEREAS, Bard students believe that Aramark workers should be granted a viable wage increase and that the administration should ensure that the number of custodial workers justly corresponds to the amount of work on campus; and

WHEREAS, Bard College makes available tuition remission and exchange programs for faculty, staff and Buildings and Grounds workers but excludes the custodial and food service staff;

BE IT RESOLVED, The Bard College Student Association supports the Aramark workers in their struggle to attain a viable wage and see to the hiring of custodial workers at Bard, and;

BE IT RESOL VED, The Bard College Student Association demands that the Bard College administration immediately make an appeal to the Aramark Corporation to hire more Bard custodians, increase their wages, and make available tuition exchange and remission programs to the custodial staff at Bard.
