Resolution Expressing the Support of the College Democrats of Colgate University for the Unionization Efforts of Sodexho Employees at Colgate University

WHEREAS many of the employees of Sodexho at Colgate University feel that they have been treated unfairly by their employer, and

WHEREAS these employees have raised concerns regarding, but not limited to, inequitable and unfair treatment in regard to wages, inadequate staffing, cutbacks in hours, and capricious and arbitrary conduct by management, and

WHEREAS several Sodexho employees have expressed an interest in forming a union to defend their basic rights and to overcome the inequality of power between employer and employees, and have begun to take the steps necessary to bring about a vote on whether or not to form a union, and

WHEREAS all workers deserve to make a free and fair decision on whether to form a union, and

WHEREAS the National Labor Relations Act has codified that right into federal law, and

WHEREAS the Democratic Party has a long history of defending the rights of workers to organize to defend their rights against the unequal power of employers,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT

The College Democrats of Colgate University, Hamilton, NY

1) HEREBY express our unequivocal support for the employees of Sodexho in exercising their right to decide whether or not to form a union, and

2) HEREBY pledge to assist in these unionization efforts in any reasonable way, and to avail ourselves, our time, and our resources to the employees of Sodexho, and

3) HEREBY show our disapproval of any and all efforts by Sodexho management to interfere with workers’ right to make a free and fair decision on whether to form a union; this includes the holding of anti-union meetings, as well as other forms of direct and indirect pressure and intimidation.

This resolution will be communicated to Sodexho management, Sodexho employees, campus and local newspapers, and other individuals involved or interested in the efforts by Sodexho employees to form a union.

RESOLVED THIS 17TH DAY OF MARCH, 2004 BY THE COLLEGE DEMOCRATS OF COLGATE UNIVERSITY
