We Support Sen. Gillibrand’s Bill to Reduce Student Loan Debt

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has introduced the Federal Student Loan Refinancing Act, a bill that would allow borrowers to refinance their student loan debt at a lower interest rate. Gillibrand reasons that since business owners and homeowners are able to refinance, why can’t student loan holders?

Last week, the NYS Assembly and NYS Senate included language in their house budgets (resolution) that supports a human service cost of living adjustment (COLA). This is fantastic news!

However, the Governor’s budget did not include an increase and the Senate language does not state how much money would be allocated.

State legislation report 2013 – June 24, 2013

Bills that SEIU Local 200United supported that passed both the Senate and Assembly:

Developmental disabilities funding restored
A6692C/S4777D- Restores up to $90 million in funds for agencies that serve people with developmental disabilities. This is intended to insure that cuts adopted in the budget do not affect direct services and appropriates funds if the cost savings cannot be achieved by a plan to reduce administrative costs and audit Medicaid billings. So while it is a significant victory in our fight against budget cuts, there will still be efforts by the state to reduce spending through restraints on administrative costs in agencies.
