Schools are closed, but essential workers must still report to work. This leaves many families in a childcare gap.

For right now, providers and parents are being asked to fill out a form (New York, Vermont), and state officials are attempting to match available care to families that need it.

There is hope that more childcare slots could become available. The federal CARES Act allocated $3.5 billion for child care through the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG), and authorized states to use funds to provide child care assistance to healthcare workers and other essential workers without regard to CCDBG income eligibility requirements. If you are an essential worker who has not been able to get reliable childcare, call your elected officials and demand they do more to get you a solution.
