Before you contact a navigator, however, determine which plan is best for you and your family:
- Evaluate your family history and any potential health concerns that need to be addressed. This will help you determine which plans your current healthcare provides accept.
- Look at your personal finances and establish a budget for healthcare related costs. Factor in eligible discounts or financial assistance (more on this later). Also consider any co-payments, deductibles and co-insurance resulting from visiting physicians, hospitals and other medical facilities.
- Examine the plans at www.nystateofhealth.ny.gov. Note any restrictions on coverage. Research ratings of the insurance companies offered in New York, and inquire if these plans cover services from providers in your region, and how many.
