Ever hear the expression ‘there’s power in numbers’? That’s what’s at the heart of a union. We are a group of workers who come together to build power and make changes at work and in our communities. Working together as a union, we can accomplish a lot! We can increase our pay, improve our benefits, make our workplaces safer, protect our jobs, and demand dignity and respect from our bosses.

The law doesn’t require an employer to provide things like health insurance or paid vacation; the law doesn’t stop employers from disciplining or firing workers without good reason; the law doesn’t generally make bosses to treat workers fairly. But as a union, we have the power to negotiate as equals with our employer, and sign a legally binding contract that guarantees rights and benefits at work.

Yes! As a union member, you not only have a voice in your workplace through contract negotiations, the grievance process, and labor-management meetings, but you have a voice in your union: you vote to ratify your contract, you vote for union leaders like the chapter chair in your shop, and you vote for elected union leaders like our president and executive board (and you can run for those positions, too). SEIU members also have access to member only benefits.

As union members, we all pay union dues. Unlike charities, the rich do not donate money to empower workers. So we work together by sticking up for fellow members, standing up to injustice, and paying dues to make things like contract negotiations and grievance handling possible.
